Year 4 Trip To Burnsall

On Friday 30th June and Monday 3rd July, Year 4 visited Burnsall as part of their Geography learning. The purpose of the visit was to look and the similarities and differences between Leeds and the Yorkshire Dales. Despite the weather, all of the children seemed to enjoy the trip and they represented the school brilliantly. If you haven’t been to Burnsall before it is a lovely place to visit for a family day out and I’m sure your child will be able to give you a very detailed guided tour!

We took a lot of pictures during our trips and links to these can be found at the bottom of this blog.

Map Reading

When we arrived in Burnsall we immediately began our walk along the River Wharfe to the famous Hebden Suspension Bridge. On the walk we made a number of stops for map reading and studying the physical and human geography. One of the main geographical features we looked at were St Wilfred’s Scar and Loup Scar. Children in 4HB were luckily enough to see someone jumping into the river from quite a height!

Once we arrived at the bridge, the children were VERY keen to try the stepping stones across the river. However, we decided that it wasn’t on Mr Hemming’s risk assessment so we stuck to the bridge. Children were initially concerned that the wrapped steel cable bridge was too old to be safe (it was built in 1885) but we reassured them that it has been very well conserved. The children enjoyed the creaking and swaying as they crossed the bridge and they were much braver than the accompanying adults!

Ice-Cream!

Even in rainy weather, a visit to the Yorkshire Dales wouldn’t be complete without trying some of the local ice-cream! 4L were able to sample a variety of flavours from Burnsall Ice-Cream Shop who gave us a significant discount on the normal price and certainly didn’t skimp on the portion sizes! On Monday, the Burnsall Ice-Cream Shop was closed (despite us arranging to arrive at just after lunch) but the staff at the Red Lion Pub served the children a bowl of ice-cream (“the finest Madagascan vanilla” according to one of the children) while they sat in the garden looking out onto the river.

Surveys

As part of the comparison with Leeds, children completed a survey of the public to find out why they were visiting Burnsall. All of the children were confident and polite as they spoke to members of the public. Children also completed a traffic survey and will use the results as part of their learning in class.

St Wilfred’s Church

Before heading home, we walking through Burnsall to St Wilfred’s Church. Unfortunately, 4HB were unable go to inside the church because there was a church service in progress but they were able to walk through the church yard and look at many of the headstones. Children were interested to see the dates on the headstones and found many headstones with the same surnames.

For 4L, who were able to visit the inside of the church, the main points of interest were the Viking stones that were all found locally as well as the stained glass windows. All of the children were very respectful of the church and we did our best not to disturb the parishioners who were arranging flowers for a wedding.

On our way back to the minibuses we stopped outside Burnsall Primary school. We found out that the school building dates from 1602, and is completely different from any school building the children have seen in Leeds.

Messy Maps

When the children returned to they created some fantastic ‘Messy Maps’ which show the main physical and human features that we observed. The link to the pictures is here.

Children will now prepare a Google Slides Presentation about what they have learnt.
