Another week of Science in Year 5
Hi all,
This week in year 5 we have continued to learn about forces. In 5KH we made parachutes and designed a fair test to test the affect of changing one variable while keeping the others the same. Some children changed the size of the parachute, some changed the length of the strings and some changed the weight of the object it was carrying. At the end of the lesson we went outside and had a competition to see whose parachute was best at falling slowly as possible from the top of the treehouse!

We then completed an investigation testing friction on different surfaces. We did this by pulling a weighted box across different surfaces using a force metre. The children recorded 3 results for each surface in a table and then found the average measure. They used these results to form a conclusion about what the best non-slip surface would be.
In French we have been learning how to say the names of clothes in French. Perhaps you could ask your child if they remember any of the words. At the end of the year we will have a French fashion show where the children can wear their own clothes but must remember how to say them in French. Get ready for the Cat Walk!
In English we have been planning how to write a balanced arguement. This is quite a tricky style of writing. The children have come up with some great ideas, ranging from ‘Should Komodo Daragons be eliminated?’ to ‘Should we introduce the four day working week?’ or ‘Should children be allowed to eat in lessons?’ This week we have been doing a lot of research and I’m looking forward to writing and reading the finished peices next week.
Next week we will begin preparing for Sport’s day which will be on Wednesday 9th July. 5KH have already found out what colour team they will be in and so now we need to practise, and decide which races each child would like to do.
Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs Kroon and the Year 5 team
