Farsley Farfield Primary School

Dear diary, it’s been a wet week!

Maths

This week, the children continued their learning of place value, focusing on partitioning numbers up to 1000 using the base-10 and part-whole models. Children worked independently and in pairs, creating different three-digit numbers and partitioning them into hundreds, tens and ones. Once they were confident, they used strategies to partition the same number in various ways using maths apparatus and writing number sentences. We then moved on to working out different values of hundreds, tens, and ones using place value counters and used our understanding to determine values of 1, 10, and 100 more or less than a 3- digit number. This might be helpful for some of the children.

English

Our week has been all about diaries. Children verbally shared their understanding of diaries and recognised some of the features before moving on to annotating a diary entry with the features they could identify. We learned more about the difference between the present and past tenses, and children had a go at changing sentences to the past tense before attempting to write their own. We ended the week by planning a diary from the perspective of a Stone Age child. We’re looking forward to writing them next week!

Science

The children are becoming more familiar with the different types of rocks we have been learning about in our lessons, and this week, they investigated the suitability of a rock for creating a statue. Children wrote which rocks left marks when scratched and after comparing the rocks, they chose a rock suitable for a statue and wrote down their reasons.

History

Year 3 enjoyed learning about the role of a hunter-gatherer this week. Children examined a picture and used their inference skills to discuss what it suggests about the Stone Age. They shared their ideas in pairs and small groups before mind mapping their thoughts. After learning more about the hunter-gatherer lifestyle, Year 3 students turned into hunters and went on a short foraging expedition to search for food, noting down suitable places for a tent as well as gathering equipment to make one. With it being a cold and rainy week, children discussed what life would be like living outside, the need for waterproof materials when building homes, and the importance of keeping warm.

Here’s the picture children discussed.

PSHE

This week, we learned more about smoking as a drug, and as a class, we discussed the impact it can have on the body, both inside and outside of the body. Some of the children shared their thoughts on why some people might smoke and labelled a diagram with different parts that can be affected.

Homework
Maths – 1, 10 & 100 more and less

Reminders

This week, Chromebook forms were sent home for parents to sign and return to school. A signed form and a suitable case must be brought into school for it to be sent home. All children have been sent their login details, and some children have also taken home their Chromebooks today.

Outdoor/Indoor shoes
Children must have a pair of indoor and outdoor shoes. Please ensure your child has a pair of both, especially with the weather change and the grounds becoming muddy.
