Year 5 blog

Good afternoon all,

We have had an incredibly fun and busy week in Year 5!

In science we recreated a to scale version of the solar system. Shrunk down by a scale of 100,000,000,000km to cm. The children used metre sticks and trundle wheels to measure out the distances.

Here are some photos to show what it looked like. The children were surprised by how big the sun was in comparison to the rest of the planets and by how far apart the outer planets were.

In English we have been learning about Greek Myths.

We then performed Theseus and the Minotaur as a freeze frame. The children worked well together to organise their parts and recreate different scenes from the story.

The children then wrote a precis of the story. We have been impressed by their effort in writing so far this year.

In Maths we have continued to work on place value. Children have been partitioning and ordering numbers up to 1 million. Homewrok has been set to order and compare large numbers.

Children have also been set spellings for homework. Please ensure that they learn them and return their homework books for Wednesday next week so that we can stick their next homework in.

Both classes improved their extreme reading scores which we are really pleased about. Please can you ensure that your child reads 5 x a week and brings their signed reading record in every day. We will encourage children to change their school reading books on a Monday and bring them home.

Just an early reminder that we will be having Greek day on Tuesday 7th October. Your child will need an Ancient Greek outfit. This can easily be homemade out of sheets if you do not wish to buy one. Here are some examples.

We hope you have an lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing all the children next week.

Thanks Mrs Kroon/Mrs Kenvyn and Mr Beevers.
