If I was in Year 3…
We have had another great week in Year 3! The children are settling into their new classrooms very well and showing super enthusiasm for their learning!
Maths
In Maths this week, the children have continued with their place value topic, focussing on 3-digit numbers. At the beginning of the week, children explored number lines up to 100 by counting up in different intervals and filling in missing numbers. The children then learnt what 100 was by looking at different representations and counting up in 100s. Later in the week, children learnt how to represent 3-digit numbers in different ways including using Base 10 and part-whole models, before partitioning 3-digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones. Have a look at the video below to recap how to partition 3-digit numbers!
English
In English this week, the children learnt all about subordinating conjunctions! They learnt that a subordinating conjunction joins a subordinate clause to the main clause of a sentence. For example, I was late for work because I slept in. The children also practised moving their subordinating conjunctions to different places in the sentence, e.g. Because I slept in, I was late for work. The children then practised writing sentences using the word ‘if’, for example, ‘If I lived in the Stone Age, I might have lived in a cave.’ To help them remember the different subordinating conjunctions, they used the acronym, ‘I SAW A WABUB’.

Guided Reading
Our book this half term is Stone Age Boy and the children have enjoyed exploring the story and its illustrations so far! In their first lesson, the children looked carefully at the front cover of the book and made some predictions about what the story might be about. We then read the first few pages and met two characters, a boy and a girl, and the children thought about the similarities and differences between them using the information in the text and illustrations. Finally, the children answered some inference questions about the girl and her family. They did a super job at thinking like a detective and looking for clues to make their inferences!

History
In History this week, the children enjoyed exploring Stone Age artefacts to learn more about life at that time. The children worked together in their groups to think carefully about what each artefact was made from and what it might have been used for. They came up with some fantastic educated guesses, based on what they already know about the Stone Age, including what sort of materials would have been available. Some of the artefacts we looked at included fishing hooks, a snail shell necklace and stone tools.
Science
Is it bumpy? Is it soft? Is it sparkly? These were the types of questions our science lessons included this week, as children worked through flowcharts that became increasingly difficult, requiring them to answer yes or no to determine the type of rock. Year 3 loved working in small groups and pairs!
