2BW – Skelton Grange

2BW had the most wonderful trip to Skelton Grange on Tuesday to find out all about different minibeasts and their habitats. We began the day by playing some games and answering some quiz questions before splitting into our three groups for the morning.

We had lots of fun using nets to find different minibeasts in the pond during our pond dipping activity. We found pond snails, water boatmen, tadpoles, pond fleas, a baby newt and a dragonfly nymph. We were lucky enough to spot some dragonflies also flying around the pond! We enjoyed using the magnifying glasses to take a closer look at all the creatures.

We were challenged to order to life cycle of a ladybird and even saw all the different stages in real life! We looked under logs and in the bug hotel for minibeasts and discovered woodlice, spiders, centipedes and ants.

In the meadow, we used large nets to sweep the bushes and trees for minibeasts. Some of us were lucky enough to catch a butterfly! We then played the bee game and pretended to collect pollen from the plants.

In the afternoon, we had SO much fun playing in the woodland. We built dens, made a track for balls to roll down, relaxed in hammocks, swung through the trees, climbed across ropes, drew pictures with chalk, dressed up and played in the mud kitchen!
