Year 2 News 6.11.26

English

This week we have been exploring poetry about fireworks. We started the week by reading and performing poems, considering how to speak clearly and expressively and use actions to entertain.

Terrific Year Two were amazed by alliteration and enjoyed experimenting with phrases where the words begin with the same words. Can you make an alliterative phrase about your name like magical Mrs Midwood?

At the end of the week after reading lots of acrostic poems and collecting some ‘right-choice’ adjectives and verbs we have drafted our own poems. Once we had completed our first draft, we looked at how we could improve our poems by changing or adding words and phrases. We also checked our spellings. Next week, we will copy these up and add illustrations.

Firework Safety

We spent some time talking to the children about how to stay safe around fireworks and on bonfire night. The children were able to make some safety rules.

Spellings

This week in spellings we have looked at the different ways to spell the oa sound. We have also been practising would, could and should.

Maths

In maths this week we have been learning some strategies for subtracting ones. This was particularly tricky when we needed to subtract across a ten! We then looked at adding and subtracting tens.

Geography

We started a new topic in geography; we looked at where the hot and cold places are in the world and learned about the equator, an invisible line that goes around the centre of the earth.

PSHE

We started our new unit on friendship, starting with listing all the qualities that make a good friend.

This week’s homework links to this.

Cooperation in PE

This week both classes started a new unit of PE focusing on cooperation and teamwork. We undertook a particularly challenging task of working with friends to create a ‘hoop hut’ using five hula hoops to create a structure that would stand independently.
