Geography
It was onto volcanoes this week for Year 6 as they learnt about the different types of volcanoes found in the world and a little more about where they are located. Did you know, there is an area called the Ring of Fire surrounding the Pacific Ocean which is home to 75% of the Earth’s active and dormant volcanoes and 90% of its earthquakes?! Children completed a cross section of a volcano and later some created some amazing posters and creative circle books showcasing their understanding.
Here is a fun quiz to complete about volcanoes
English
In English this week, children have been practising using cohesive devices which ensure our writing is sensible and has a logical flow. Year 6 worked hard on planning their paragraphs about the incredible and unusual creatures of Pandora and used conjunctive adverbs to act as a bridge between ideas. Next week, we will be extending our ideas with relative clauses and finishing off our work with some beautiful published pieces.
We also hope to watch Kensuke’s Kingdom next week as a celebration of all the lovely writing we have done and as a way of ending our half term. Here is the trailer to watch if you are interested!
Maths
Children have been introduced to long division this week and it’s been tricky for some of us to get our heads around a complicated method! Well done for everyone for being so positive and resilient. One of the most important things for children to do is record their multiples and we have taught them a way to do this efficiently. It would be brilliant if you can ask them to show you how to do it as explaining it to someone is one of the best ways to ensure understanding. We have set a mathletics task around long division this week for most children for homework. Please support your child in giving this a go and do let us know if it’s something they find tricky
Here is a video explaining the method we used to divide in case children forget or seem unclear.
