Week 6 in Year 3

Maths
This week in Maths, we started our new unit on addition and subtraction. We used practical resources to recap number bonds to 10 before exploring how to add and subtract 1 and 10. We then moved on to adding and subtracting 100s using maths apparatus and discussed what happens to a number when it increases and decreases. The children represented different values in a range of ways, including writing calculations, creating bar models and showing numbers in numerals and words.

When, where and how?
Last week, we were introduced to adverbials in English. The children focused on fronted adverbials and explored how they can add extra detail to our writing. We practised creating our own fronted adverbials using time, manner, and place on whiteboards, then challenged ourselves to identify suitable adverbials for different sentences.

Science
It’s been a rocky week for Year 3! Children enjoyed learning about soil and wrote down key points about each layer including what each matter is made up of. They then spent a fun afternoon recreating the different layers using different coloured pieces of card and shared their understanding with their peers.

PSHE
This week, Year 3 learned all about water safety. The children took part in a live water safety session and shared what to look out for near rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water, and why it’s important to stay aware of potential dangers. We also explored the meanings of different water safety flags and discussed how they help to keep us safe. To finish the session, the children put their knowledge to the test by looking at a picture and spotting potential dangers.
