Well done to all the children in Year 6 who have done their best this week during our baseline assessments! The Year 6 team will use these tests to identify gaps in children’s learning and plan future lessons. We will also be able to talk parents through the results at our first parents’ evening which will be coming up shortly.
Geography
This week the children began to learn about the tectonic plates that cover the Earth. We talked about a new geographical word: lithosphere. Can your child explain to you what this is?
The Earth’s crust looked quite thin on our cross-section of the Earth’s layers but it isn’t thin at all! Did you know scientists dug for over 25 years to create the Kola Superdeep Borehole and didn’t manage to break through the Earth’s crust? Take a look at this quiz and test your knowledge.
What if we could dig through the Earth?
RE
We have begun our first unit of RE this week about Sikhism and how members of the Sikh faith symbolise commitment to their beliefs. We thought about what the word values meant and identified the values which were important to us and which help guide the way we live our life. We hope to visit a local Gurdwara as part of this unit of work in November and will be sending out details about this in the coming weeks.
PSHE
Congratulations to our new school councillors in Year 6 who were elected this week in their classes. Both teachers were incredibly impressed by the preparation which went into the presentations and speeches the children gave; it is clear that we have many responsible and civic-minded children in our year group.
In PSHE this week, we began our MindMate unit: feeling good and being me. Children discussed what mental health is and what it feels like when our wellbeing is good. We talked about the importance of sleep to our physical and mental health and began to identify ways we can practice self-care.
General Reminders
Can all children please make sure they have indoor shoes. The weather is beginning to change and the ground is becoming wetter; children need a pair of closed toed shoes / trainers to wear once they have changed out of their outdoor pair.
