This week, we have been continuing to read The Hobbit and prepare for our major writing piece, which will be a diary extract. One of the features of a diary is that tends to use past tense verbs in the perfect tense. Although this can sound confusing when learning about it, it just means that ‘had’ needs to be included in the phrase. The four main types of past tense in English are the Simple Past (I cooked), Past Continuous (I was cooking), Past Perfect (I had cooked), and Past Perfect Continuous (I had been cooking). These tenses are used to describe completed actions, ongoing past events, or actions completed before other past actions.
Maths
We have completed our unit on statistics and are now moving on to shapes. This module involves learning about angles and measuring them with a protactor.

Cycling
A significant activity on the Year 5 residential is cycling in and around Gisburn Forest. As a result, we have spent time this week with some children who need to build up their confidence on a bike. It is an absolute delight to see progress in this area and all the credit must go to the children involved for their determination. Click here to see a few photos and videos.
Finally
Finally, there was a very spectacular and exciting sight (depending on your point of view) outside 5B around 15 minutes after everyone had left on Friday. Through the window, the sky looked like it was full of smoke. However, a closer look revealed it to be a swarm of bees. The bees then quickly settled on to one of the apple trees and made themselves at home. There is nothing to worry about though, as Mr Harris phoned our local beekeepers, who have been tasked with coming to move the swarm to one of our hives.
