This week in English, we have been focusing on writing our own stories set in the world of ‘How to Train your Dragon’. The children first spent some time thinking carefully about what they would include in each section of their story, and how they would incorporate the characters that they had designed to be the protagonist. Once this was done, we spent a number of sessions developing these initial ideas and fleshing them out into fully formed stories. It was really interesting to see the directions that each child took their story and how many different ideas could come from the same source material.
In Maths, we have started to explore length and perimeter, begining with an exploration of km and m. The children showed a good understanding of the difference between these measurements and how to convert between them. They were also able to successfully identify which type of measurement would be most effective when checking the length of a range of objects and places.
In History, we have been continuing our exploration of the Anglo-Saxons. We explored how the average Anglo-Saxon would have lived (including the roles of men, women and children) and identified some of the key features of Saxon houses. We also had a chance to explore some Anglo-Saxon artefacts, with the children taking on different roles to try and figure out what each object was and what it might be used for. There were some really fantastic discussions taking place around these objects!
Next week in Guided Reading, we are hoping to pull together our work on ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by comparing parts of the book to their corresponding sections of the original animated film. As the film is rated PG, we require parental permission in order to do this. Mrs Sykes sent out an email earlier this week containing a link to a permission form – if you have not seen this or had the chance to complete it yet, please try to do so by Tuesday 10th February.
