We have had another lovely week in Year 3! The children continue to put their best efforts into their independent work, ask thoughtful questions, give interesting contributions to class discussions and learn something new every day!
Maths
The children have been learning their 8 times table in Maths this week. They began by understanding how to multiply numbers by 8 before learning to divide numbers by 8 using either grouping or sharing. They then put all of this knowledge together to learn their 8 times tables. Have a look at the video below to recap diving by 8.
English
In English this week, the children have been learning how to add detail with adverbs and how to punctuate direct speech. At the start of the week, children wrote some descriptive sentences relating to the True Story of the Three Little Pigs, using adverbs (words to describe how a verb is performed) to add further detail. Here are some examples!
‘Mr Wolf was kindly making a cake for his Grandma when he sadly ran out of sugar.’
‘The oldest pig rudely insulted the wolf’s Granny and unexpectedly, the cops arrived and Mr Wolf was arrested.’
The children then learnt how to punctuate direct speech. They learnt that speech needs inverted commas (speech marks) at the beginning and the end of it to show which words are said by a character. They also learnt that they need another piece of punctuation before the last speech mark, which could either be a comma, question mark or exclamation mark, depending on the sentence type. There was a lot of new information to remember, but the children did a super job and wrote some great examples of speech sentences! They also thought of some interesting synonyms for the word ‘said’, such as yelled, whispered and shouted, as well as adding adverbs for further detail!
Science
We continued with our Forces topic in Science this week, looking at magnetism. The children gathered a range of objects from around the classroom and predicted whether they would be magnetic or not. They then used a magnet to test whether the objects were magnetic. The children concluded that for an object to be magnetic, it had to be metal, however, not all metals are magnetic!
Homework
Maths – We would like children to practise their 8 times-table on TT Rockstars this week using ‘Jamming’. This game mode allows children to chose specific tables and the number of questions they need to answer. We have also set up a battle between both classes!
