Happy New Year! The children have had a great week back and have all been very busy.
Phonics
This week we have been practicing all the phonemes and digraphs we have learnt so far. We learnt the new digraph ‘oo’, it is the short oo sound like in wood, book, shook. The children have been practising reading the hard to read and spell words – my, you, was, the, he.
We have been writing about what they did over the school holidays or about a gift they may have received. The children are hearing some of the phonemes at the beginning, middle and end of words and starting to spell hard to read and spell words correctly like the, is, we.
Phonics live
We have our next and final phonics live lessons taking place next week – Tuesday 13th January and Thursday 15th January. Both phonics lessons will start at 9am and last 30 minutes. It is a great lesson for you to see how we teach the new phonics scheme and of course how fantastic the children are at listening and joining in.
Maths
This week the children have continued to engage with counting activities. They have worked hard to match collections of objects to their representations. We have discussed the concept of cardinality and the children have developed their understanding of it being the last number in the count which tells us ‘how many’ things there are altogether. The children are beginning to count more abstract things such as claps and jumps.
Whatever Next
Our focus book this half term is Whatever Next! by Jill Murphy.
The children have had lots of fun acting out this story.
Music
This half term in music the children are learning new songs, one is called ‘Have you brought your talking voices?’ This is encouraging the children to use different voices to develop their pitch. ‘5 little monkeys’ this is an action song so we are encouraging the children to watch and follow the leader with the words, pitch and actions.
The best part of music is playing the instruments and following the ‘conductor’ so they play their instruments quietly or loudly.
