Y6 09.01.26 – Happy New Year!

Welcome back to everyone this week! We have hit the ground running with lots of hard work and new topics to get our teeth into.

Science – Evolution and Inheritance

We have begun our new unit in science: evolution and inheritance. We began the term looking at the creation of life on Earth and talked about dinosaurs, meteorites, apes and more! The children have begun to create their own comic strips and picture stories to tell the story of the creation of Earth and we hope to finish these and show you next week.

English

This week we have started our new text ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan. This is a picture book and the children have had to use lots of inference and imagination to come up with storylines to accompany the images given. This week we have been focusing on writing dialogue and accompanying this with action and narrative. The children have worked hard and have showcased their ability to use speech in their writing.

Using a model section, children worked on padlet to have a go at writing their own conversations using the images from the beginning of the text.

Padlet for 6J is here

We will be building on this in the coming weeks when we focus on a larger piece of narrative writing.

Maths

This week, the children have begun their new unit on ratio, starting by exploring the key language and developing their understanding of what a ratio shows. They have been learning to describe relationships between quantities and have started to represent these relationships using the ratio symbol, building a strong foundation for the work ahead. Ratio is used in many real-life situations, such as following recipes, mixing paint colours, sharing quantities fairly, and reading maps or scale drawings. Seeing these practical applications helps the children understand the importance of ratio and how it can be used beyond the classroom.
