English
At the start of the week, we wrote explanation texts to show how objects in the 1960s were different to today. The children were able to organise their writing into clear paragraphs with subheadings.
We then read a new text called, ‘The Sea of Tranquility’. We enjoyed making predictions from the front cover and were very surprised that this was a story because we all thought it was going to be a non-fiction book! We started to collect some vocabulary about the moon and drew some moon maps.
Spelling
We have been learning how to spell words with the suffixes ment and ness.
Maths
This week we have been learning about fractions. We have learned to recognise and find one half and one quarter of a shape or amount. We will continue this next week.
History
In history this week, we have learned about the moon landings. We started by looking at the history of flight and placed some pictures in chronological order. We then looked at some pieces of evidence such as photographs, newspapers and artefacts and talked about what these sources told us about the events. We also thought of questions to ask Neil Armstrong and discussed the reasons he may have wanted to go to the moon. We looked at some different reasons and put them in a diamond shape to show which we considered the most important and the least.
PSHE
In our first lesson on boys, girls and families, we started to find out some similarities and differences between each other. We got into boy/girl pairs and found lots of things we had in common and also a few differences too. We then talked about if some things were just for girls or just for boys. We noticed through our history that there were more things that were just for boys or just for girls but that nowadays most things are equal. Here we are placing statements on a venn diagram:
Science
This week in science we discussed why the seeds we had looked at last week hadn’t become plants. The children said that they needed light and water and needed to be planted in some soil.
We then watched a video which explained that the seeds were dormant and that they needed certain conditions for germination to happen.
We put our seeds in a window greenhouse so that we can make observations of what happens during germination. We also planted some of our seeds in soil to see what happens.
