The children of Year 4 have been working fantastically well this week, developing their understanding of diaries, perimeter and much more. However, we have had a particular focus on science this week – mostly because we had a visit from the wonderful ‘Sam the Sound Man’.
In our science lessons this week, the children explored which states of matter sound could travel through, making comparisons between haring a sound through the air and hearing it through a solid, such as when you listen at a door or wall using a glass. We also explored the effect of liquids on sounds and discovered that although it was possible to hear sounds through liquids, it was much more muffled.
During Sam’s workshop, he was able to guide the children through a wide range of scientific facts about how sound waves travel and how the volume and pitch of a sound could be changed. The children all engaged fantastically well with the wide range of investigations that Sam had prepared as well as his questions and were excellent representatives of the school. Sam then showed the children a variety of ways to make musical instruments from everyday items. We will be using this information in the coming weeks to make our own instruments.
This week, the children have been given both maths and spelling homework, which is due in on Wednesday 19th March. The children may also wish to start thinking about what resources they have available to them at home for their instrument making and begin collecting things, though they do not need to bring anything into school yet.
