This week has flown by as it has been slightly shorter, but it has still been packed with engaging learning and valuable experiences.
Our highlight was a lovely PSHE workshop delivered by Leeds City Council, focusing on personal hygiene and keeping ourselves healthy. The children learned a lot, including:
- The importance of personal hygiene in daily life.
- What germs are, including bacteria and viruses, and how they can spread.
- How infections are treated and prevented, with a focus on understanding antibiotics and their proper use.
We hope that these sessions have made the children think about how small actions like washing hands can have a big impact on staying healthy.
English
This week, we continued our work on traditional tales and started putting our own spin on them! We discussed how stories might change if told from another character’s perspective. After reading a twist on Little Red Riding Hood, we debated which version we liked best and why.
Then we turned to Jack and the Beanstalk, brainstorming fun ways to switch it up—like making Jack the baddie and the giant the hero. Some children even suggested Jack trading a Bugatti for the magic beans! The class got creative by breaking down and mapping out their retellings on story mountains. We’ll continue planning these next week and hopefully start writing soon!
History
The classroom was full of hieroglyphics as the children explored how communication developed in ancient Egypt. They decoded messages, learned about scribes, and reflected on how writing was essential for survival and connection. We also enjoyed writing our own names in hieroglyphics on parchment paper—we hope you enjoyed seeing them too!
Science
This week, 3CW explored magnetic materials. We made predictions and tested objects to see which were magnetic. We learned that while all magnetic materials are metal, not all metals are magnetic. The children really enjoyed researching magnetism further on their Chromebooks.
Meanwhile, 3B read A Pocketful of Trouble. This story gave us a fun opportunity to dive deeper into magnetism and explore what magnets can and can’t do.
PE
This week’s focus for 3CW was on fundamental movement skills. The children are learning about moving around the space and as the weeks progress, we will look closer at our jumping and landing techniques too. The focus for 3B was on invasion games. The children learnt about basketball and started to understand more about teamwork and strategy skills.
Maths
3CW have explored the 2, 4, and 8 times tables through real-world problems such as counting legs and calculating paper clip lengths. We looked at multiples of 10, solving sequences using ten frames to multiply numbers. The children also practiced related calculations, breaking down multiplications into simpler steps (for example, 2 × 4 = 8 so we know that 2 x 40 = 80) to make solving problems easier.
3B have been dividing without exchange and dividing flexible parts using counters and the part whole model.
