This week, we have been reading the story Mr Wolf’s Pancakes, an alternative version of the traditional tale The Little Red Hen. We discussed the similarities and differences between the two texts and which we preferred. We then planned our own stories that have a main character wanting to make something and three unhelpful friends. We can’t wait to write our stories next week!
Spelling- air, are, ear, ere
This week we looked at the different ways to spell the phoneme air. We sorted words and looked at homphone pairs too. There is no particular rule for this sound so we just need to read and learn which spelling pattern it is.
Maths
We have been focussing on counting in our maths lessons this week. We used a range of practical resources and pictorial representations to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We began by building our fluency with missing number tracks and 100 squares then progressed to answering a range of reasoning and problem solving questions. We then moved on to counting in 3s. We will continue to consolidate this over the next few weeks and will of course revisit it during our multiplication and division work. Well done to those children who have completed the set activities on Mathletics!
Geography
Is Farsley an urban or rural area? We were challenged to find the different human and physical features in Farsley this week to help us decide whether it is an urban or rural place. We looked at some maps of Farsley and picked out the different buildings we recognised such as houses, the infant building and the junior school building. Using the chromebooks, we then used Google Earth to look in more detail at the different human features in Farsley. We managed to spot the library, police station, shops, restaurants and even some of our own houses! We all agreed that Farsley is an urban area as lots of people live and work there.
PSHE/Science
In PSHE this week we looked at handwashing. We talked about why is it important to wash hands and when. We then used what we had learned in English a few weeks ago to write some instructions for washing our hands.
In science, we looked at all the different ways of keeping ourselves clean. We talked about how often we should do each task.
DT
We enjoyed investigating two more different moving picture mechanisms; a lever and pivot to create a moving part and a wheel. The children enjoyed creating these. We made either a wolf that could open his mouth or a cat with a moving tail. Our wheel mechanism created different expressions on the person!
