This week, Year 3 had a memorable time participating in their first KS2 sports day, where they showcased their athletic skills, and enjoyed watching their peers shine in the science superstars event, where they demonstrated their scientific knowledge and creativity!
Maths
This week, we have come to the end of our final maths unit, focusing on time. The children have enjoyed learning about units of time, ordering activities, and solving time problems. Next week, we will consolidate key areas covered this year and practise our times tables.
English
Last week, Year 3 enjoyed researching Mesopotamian blues and street cats and used this information to write a non-chronological report using key features. Children included their appearances, habitat, hunting skills and what they might eat. We have also enjoyed reading Varjak Paw, learning about some of the gangs, and meeting Sally Bones. We were very impressed with how children included this information to explain what a street may look like and key characteristics, including forming their communities and marking their territories.
Roman roads
This week, year 3 learned more about the changes that Romans made to Britain, including Roman roads and were fascinated to learn that some routes still exist today! After looking at places that roads were built, children added them to a map and then drew a diagram showing how a road was created during Roman times.
Sports day!
We were lucky to have reasonably good weather with a sprinkle of rain on Wednesday afternoon whilst Year 3 participated in Sports Day! All the children were encouraging, loved participating in the racing, and were very excited about the teacher race! The tug of war in Year 3 was enjoyable to watch, especially between the reds and yellows. We have a good cohort of runners and skippers, and it was wonderful to see some of the children using skills they have developed in PE sessions! Well done to everyone who took part!
Science superstars!
Friday morning was full of excitement, with the finalists across KS2 ready to compete for the title! There were many exciting experiments, and we learned more about the science behind a lava lamp, bubbles within bubbles, air pressure and water, and a fire snake! Well done to everyone who took part, especially Meela and Eesher. It’s not always easy to speak in front of a big group, especially in a competition, and they did very well to explain how their experiments worked. We hope to upload more pictures for this next week!
Reading challenge
We will be drawing winners for our reading challenge next week. This year, children were challenged to read a book on a different theme each month. Please make sure your child has shown their completed challenge to their class teacher for a chance to be entered into the draw. Entries must be in by Monday, July 15th, at the latest!
Summer reading challenge
On Tuesday morning, Year 3 attended an assembly with Kate, our librarian. Kate told the children all about the summer reading challenge. Please see the attached flyer for further info. Last year, there were 78 entrants, and we would love to see more children get involved.

In September, children are invited to bring their Summer Reading Challenge medals and certificates!
We will be having a party on Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the children’s success this year! Party food will be provided.
