We have had a great start to our residential at How Stean Gorge. It is a little chilly but we have been lucky with the weather…so far!
This morning, we had a stop-off at Coldstone’s cut. We walked up the hill to look down at the limestone quarry and we were fortunate to have clear enough weather to see the quarrying operation, and the landscape of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Beauty.
Once we arrived at How Stean, we ate lunch and chatted to some of 6D who had just completed their final activity.
We then split into three groups:
Group 1 Ben, Jagat, Logan, Esme, Annie, Rosalind, Aaliyah, Odin
Group 2 Hassan, Jaideep, Max, Viaan, Amelia, Ameera, Zaynab, Sahara, Jorja
Group 3 George, Musa, Imaan, Eesa, Ra’Kai, Neive, Aayush, Alise, Anna, Davina
Below are details of today’s activities and links to photos. Some of the photos of Group 2 are taking a while to upload but we will keep trying.
Group 1 went abseiling and gorge scrambling. All of the children completed the daunting abseil into the gorge despite feeling very nervous about it. The children travelled up stream across slippery rocks and into deep pools. Everyone enjoyed jumping into the water and sliding down the rapids.
Group 2 did the Via-Ferrata course: following a metal line traversing the gorge. The course is very challenging and the children really pushed themselves out of their comfort zones. Sahara, Jaideep, Viaan and Ameera even completed the zip line challenge. We were very proud of Max and Zaynab who conquered their fears to complete the majority of the route.
Group 3 went caving. The children ventured into the caves and were really positive, even when they were feeling a bit worried. Everyone completed Tom Taylor’s cave and Egglands cave and most of the group completed Catcall. All of the children worked really hard but a special mention to Davina who was in her absolute element and loved every minute.
This evening we had a lovely walk and enjoyed fantastic views of Nidderdale. We also made the most of the weather by toasting marshmallows over the camp fire.
The children have some free time now and we hope for a peaceful evening…
