Inspired by our work on the lunar landings, we have been thinking about what it would be like to be the first child to step foot on the moon. We all got together in the hall for an exciting drama lesson where we acted out our journey to the moon and the different activities we could partake in whilst we were there. We planted flags, collected moon dust samples, drove around in moon-mobiles, climbed the rocky mountains, carried out science experiments and took photographs of our once in a lifetime trip. We then mapped out our trip to the moon before writing our very own diaries to explain and describe our adventure!
Reading
We have been exploring some non-fiction in our whole class reading sessions this week. We began by identifying the features of a non-fiction text and had an interesting discussion about the use of cartoon pictures to appeal to younger readers rather than real life photographs. Our focus for the week was to retrieve information from a non-fiction text so we used our skills to help Rex Retriever find answers to questions about the moon and astronauts.
Maths
Our work on fractions has now come to an end with counting in fractions up to a whole. We have made a start on learning how to tell the time. So far, we have explored telling the time to o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. It would be brilliant if you could have a go at this over the holidays alongside spending some time on Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars.
History
What they did Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin do on the moon? We looked at and discussed a few pieces of evidence to come to a conclusion about what the famous astronauts actually did whilst they were on the moon. We found out that they planted the American flag, collected samples of rock and dust and even carried out scientific experiments.
Science
We have been excited about our growing plants this week. Look at how well some of them have grown! Today we learned more about the life cycle of a sunflower and what will happen next to our plants. Some are ready to take home to transfer into a larger pot or plant in a sunny spot in your garden. Let us know how they get on!
