It’s been another action-packed week in Year 3!
History
We are really enjoying learning about the Romans in Year 3! This topic is a great one as it builds perfectly on our learning about Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. Last week, we considered from the Roman perspective why the Romans wanted to invade Britain. This week, we were back in role as tribe members from Iron Age Britain, debating whether we should surrender to the Romans or fight back. First, we learnt more about the different jobs and roles in an Iron Age tribe. We considered the impact a Roman invasion might have on our roles, and how we might be able to use our skills. Then we held a meeting to decide what we should do. We were really impressed with the children’s passionate, well-considered arguments. In the end, the children voted with a significant majority to fight back!
English
In English, we have been learning about newspaper reports and getting ready to write our own reports about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We focused on headlines, trying to use rhyme, alliteration, puns and short sentences to create headlines that would draw the reader in. We also learnt about how quotes are used and took on the roles of reporters and eye-witnesses. Finally, we practised using speech marks to write our quotes as direct speech.
P.E
The fields are finally starting to dry up and it has been fantastic to see so much sporting activity going on at playtimes and lunchtimes, with tennis, cricket, football and skipping all being popular choices. In our tennis lesson in P.E this week, 3SB were excited to get the nets out and to have a go at a throw, bounce, hit rally with a partner. We were a bit restricted this week, as we shared the playground with some Year 5 cyclists getting ready for their residential, but anyone who did not get a go with the nets will have a go next week! In cricket, we developed our agility, throwing and batting skills.
Science
In science, we explored the requirements of plants for life and growth, comparing the needs of different plants. The children produced some beautiful written work.
