Do you know how an elephant got its trunk? We found out how a smelly adventure and an encounter with a crocodile led to an elephant finding its nose in our work on Tinga Tinga tales this week. We began our topic by discussing what we liked about the story and who our favourite characters were and why. We then used a range of right choice adjectives to describe what the elephant was like at the beginning of the story then contrasted this with what he was like in the end. We also sequenced the story using time adverbials.
Spelling
This week we have looked at words with an a after the w or qu. We realised that the a makes an o sound!
E.g want, was, watch, wander, squash, swap, quality, quantity. Can you think of any more?
Maths
We have started our new unit of work on multiplication and division by looking at equal and unequal groups. Using a range of pictorial representations, we have been showing how to make equal groups. We then looked at using repeated addition to add equal groups to find a total amount e.g. 2+2+2+2=8. We then looked at the X symbol and wrote these as multiplication number sentences.
Geography
This week, we packed our suitcases and boarded a plane to Africa! After 9 hours in the air, we safely landed in Zambia ready to explore and learn more about how a village there contrasts with Farsley. We made sure to pack our suncream because we knew that it would be hot near the equator.
Art
Linked to our English and geography, we explored the African art known as Tingatinga art. We learned about its founder Edward Tingatinga and enjoyed looking at some of his different pieces. We then chose our favourite to draw in our sketch books. Next week we will start to plan our own Tingatinga painting.
Music
In music we have recorded our final performance of ‘Rainbows’. The children impressed us with how well they played the recorders and glockenspiel. We hope you enjoy watching our performances! Our song for this half term is called ‘The Music Man’.
PE
Our topic for PE this half term is ‘Games for Understanding’. This week we focussed on attacking as a team. We enjoyed playing a game called Galaxy Attackers. This helped us to understand attacking principles as a team.
Science
In science this week we have investigated how we can change the shape of some materials by stretching, bending, squashing and twisting.
