Phonics

The children have continued to practise the phase 5 phonemes. This week we have focused on: au, ey, a_e, and e_e. We have looked at the tricky words ‘what‘ and ‘when‘. Please continue to practise reading and writing these tricky words at home.

English

This week we enjoyed the story ‘Katie and the Dinosaurs’ by James Mayhew. In the story, Katie goes through a door that states ‘Absolutely NO admittance whatsoever’ and ends up in a dinosaur land.

We thought about other settings that might be behind a door like that and wrote some fantastic descriptive pieces.

We also wrote some T. rex concrete poems.

Maths

In maths, we have been looking at addition within 20. We have used ten frames, numicon and the number line to work out additions by adding on. We have also used our knowledge of number bonds to help us to work out calculations.

Art

This week the children have looked at the artist Pacita Abad. They have created their own canvas in her style. They look amazing.

And of course, we had a fantastic time visiting Leeds Art Gallery….

Science

In science, we had an end-of-unit assessment on materials. Most of the children are now really confident in naming materials and their properties.

Reading Buddies

This week 1B enjoyed reading with their new year 5 reading buddies. 1T will be reading with their reading buddies next week.

Next week we will be enjoying our glass workshops. Please remember to make the payment on ParentPay if you have not already done so.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
