This week in English both Year 4 classes have been hard at work learning their Autumn poems as part of the school poetry slam. The poem we have been learning is called ‘Granny’s Sugarcake’ by John Lyons and the really interesting thing about it is that it written to mimic the accent of the poet. Because of this, when we first looked at the poem together, we thought that perhaps there may have been some spelling or grammatical errors but it turned out to be entirely deliberate! The children spent the week learning their lines and practising their actions until we finally got both classes together to share their performances. We think they all did a fantastic job – don’t you agree?
Science
In science we have been exploring the idea of volume. We spent some time thinking about what it would be like if every sound in the world was the same volume. Would it make it harder to hear? Would it damage our eardrums? Once we had shared our fantastic ideas, we began to explore how we could increase or decrease the volume of a sound by using the dataloggers to measure the decibels of six different instruments. Each instrument was played three times, once softly, once strongly and once somewhere in the middle. From our data, we noticed that the harder you hit something to create a vibration, the louder it would be.
DT
Both classes have started to think about which musical instruments they would like to try and make in our upcoming DT project. We spent some time looking at the different options, thinking carefully about the tools and materials needed to create each one and built our planning around these ideas. Though we will not actually be making these instruments until the last week of the half-term, it would be a good idea to start gathering the resources needed over the next week.
