History
We have continued our learning on WW1 and this week the children looked at the role of the British Empire. We learned about one particularly brave soldier named Khudadad Khan who was the first Indian soldier to receive the Victoria Cross – here is a little more information about him:

The children became excellent historians looking at sources of propaganda from the time and forming opinions about the sorts of messages these posters were trying to send. We then looked at some first hand accounts and discussed whether the propaganda message was the real story. Alongside this we learned about the sheer numbers of soldiers involved from across the British Empire who fought on behalf the British Army. We are really looking forward to our workshop on Monday where we hope to learn a lot more about what life was like for the brave soldiers who fought on the front lines.

We have begun writing in role as one of the characters from our novel, War Horse, and the children are putting their powers of persuasion to good use as they beg for a chance to join the army. We have had great fun thinking of the skills needed to be an excellent soldier and trying to convince our audience that we would be a good choice. Next week we will be learning a famous poem linked to WW1 as part of our performance poetry unit. Here is a sneak peak at the poem in case you’d like to look at it before we learn it in class:

On the 5th and 7th December, 6J and 6D will be going to the Gurdwara in Beeston. Here is a letter regarding the trip.
The children will need to cover their heads with either a scarf or neck buff. Caps are not acceptable. Please let us know if you have trouble sourcing this for your child.
Revision Guides
Your child will have come home this evening with two SATS revision guides. This will form the basis of the homework in Year 6 until May next year. Each week we will give the children two pages of maths and two of English to complete. The accompanying guides should help them answer the questions but if there are problems, it is important that your child comes to speak with their teacher BEFORE Friday of the following week when it is due in so it can be worked on together.
The homework should cover concepts which have already been taught so this should not be new learning (unless your child was absent) and so should be accessible for all children. Children are also responsible for checking their answers in the back of the books before handing in the homework and letting class teachers know if there have been any issues.
This homework will be alongside spelling shed and sometimes also mathletics. In total, this homework should not take longer than 20 minutes to complete for each subject. We advise children that if it has taken longer than 30 minutes, they should leave it and speak with their teacher.
