We’ve had a fantastic (if packed) week this week. We have been so impressed with how well the children have been working in their lessons and they were all absolutely brilliant representatives of our school during the recent OFSTED visit!
Maths
In maths, we have been continuing our work on place value. This time, we have been looking at numbers to 10,000, particularly how we can these numbers in a variety of ways. The children did really well with this and were able to use different manipulatives (including Base 10 blocks and counters) to represent their methods of partitioning. While some children preferred to stick with the tried and true method of partitioning into 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s, some children got quite creative with their partitions! English
This week in our English lessons, we have been developing our understanding of explanation texts by looking more closely at some of the key features that they include. To begin, we had to identifying what these key features were by exploring more examples of explanation texts. We then decided to focus on two features that would be useful for not only this genre but also our wider writing: fronted adverbials and causal conjunctions. The children showed a really good understanding of both of these areas and were able to come up with a range of different examples independently.
Geography
This half-term’s geography lessons are all about the United Kingdom. This week, we started by identifying the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles – three names that some people sometimes use interchangeably but that actually refer to different things. I wonder, do you think you know the difference? This, of course, involved us looking at the different countries that make up the UK, using atlases to identify their names and capital cities in order to plot them accurately on a blank map.
Music
In our music lessons, both classes have been learning the song ‘Hoedown’. We’ve had a lot of fun learning it and might even add some of our own actions to go with it (some of the children already have)! We even managed to get a video of 4L singing through it in it’s entirety to share with you. Hopefully in the weeks to come, we will also be able to add some instruments too – keep your eyes peeled for that!
