This week in English, we have been preparing for the upcoming poetry slam. This half-term, we will be performing the lovely poem ‘From a Railway Carriage’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. As you might have guessed from the title, this poem is all about trains – specifically the sights that can be seen from within the carriage of a train.
We started off by simply exploring the poem, drawing what came to mind when we listened to the words. This was a really interesting task as everyone’s drawings were slightly different! We then had to focus on actually putting together a performance, deciding who was going to say what and what we wanted to include. The children have worked really hard to learn their lines, making sure that they are clear and loud enough to be heard by their audience. Some of the children have even added actions to go along with it!

This week we have spent a lot of time exploring different levers and linkages in preparation for our upcoming project on pop-up books. We started by looking at four unique levers that could be used to create different types of movements to see how they worked:
Once we understood how each lever worked, the children were challenged to recreate them independently. They found it tricky at first (attaching everything together was rather fiddly!), but once they got the hang of it, the children were able to create working examples of each type of lever. Some of the children then added additional parts to their levers, such as a hand that would wave or a sun that could move across the sky. Hopefully these examples will serve as useful reminders once we start actually creating our pop-up books.
Other News
4L have had a very successful trip to Burnsall today, despite the weather. We will be uploading more information about the trip, as well as all of the lovely photographs that were taken once 4HB have been on Monday, so keep an eye out for that next week!
There has not been any specific homework sent home this week, partially because 4L were out on their trip and partially because of the Camp Over. We would however, like the children to continue practising their lines and actions for the poetry slam. A copy of the poem can be found on Google Classroom for reference. The children can also make use of our online learning programs (Spelling Shed, Times Table Rockstars, Mathletics and Reading Eggspress) to continue their learning at home.
