Farsley Farfield Primary School

Head teacher blog 6th October 2017

It has been good to see children enjoying the school grounds this week: it was Y3’s week for the den-making area and I have never seen such large numbers and obvious enthusiasm and delight up there. The children have started a topic around ‘Stone Age’ and there was a lot of tool making and shelter building going on. I did have to suggest that a rather too lethal-looking spear was donated to a class museum, but generally the children have been very restrained and have played very imaginatively but responsibly. It is as if Stig of the Dump, and a load of stone age mates, have come to Farfield!

This year we have a dedicated regular girls’ football team, led by Mrs Harding and Mr Beevers and they had their first match last week, beating Alwoodley in the last minute to win 2-1. I am delighted that we have this regular new football team and they have lots more matches coming up. Our U9 and U11 teams also played last week vs Holy Family Primary School with the U9s getting a big win and the U11s suffering a heavy defeat.

Today Mrs DuPreez has taken a group of our school councillors down to Leeds Civic Hall for a day on local democracy and the working of the Leeds City Council. I am really grateful to Marie for leading the School Council and I am pleased that the children will get to engage with their city council so directly. This year, in KS2, the elections to school council were more formal than in the past, with ‘proper’ nomination papers, and the need for voters to register beforehand. This was all intended to raise the children’s awareness of how democracy works in real life. One of the first tasks for school council is to help me decide how to develop the grounds further after we had to remove the trim trails earlier this year.

Earlier this week, I was delighted to get some photos and a report from the latest Family Learning group session run by Mrs Myers in the Children’s Centre. This week they were learning about shapes and it is great to see a large vibrant group of children and parents learning together.

I’m loving the Wednesday family learning group sessions, it’s been great having the one to one time with Imaan. Great job Mrs Myers and Julie the sessions have been a great influence over the kids they seem so confident in themselves. Looking forward to next week.
